Lesson No: 1

The Throne of Justice 

(Based on a story by Romila Thapar)

Read & Answer the following Questions

Qno1: What type of game was played by the cowherds? Describe it.

Ans: The cowherds played a game- The King & the Throne. One of the cowherd became king & sat on a throne which was actually a mound. The Third cowherd (king) solved the problems & settled the quarrel of his friends very wisely.         

Qno2: Why did the King ask his men to dig up the ground?

Ans: The king asked his men to dig up the ground to find what lies hidden under the mound.

Qno3: What happened when the king was about to sit on the throne?

Ans: When the king was about to sit on the throne, one of the garudas moved its wings &  asked him that only a pure heart person could sit.

Qno4: " Only a person who has a pure heart can sit on this throne." What does the garuda mean to say here?

Ans: It means a person free from greed  & with kind heart can sit on the throne.

Qno5: What had happened twenty-three other times when the king went to sit on the throne?

Ans: The same thing happened twenty three other times when the king went to sit on the throne.

 As the king was about to sit on the throne, one of the garudas asked the same question. The King replied," He is still not ready" and went to fast  & prey for three days.

Qno6: Why was the young cowherd allowed to sit on the throne of king Vikramaditya?

Ans: The young cowherd was permitted to sit on the throne as he was pure at heart & he had never been cruel or unjust.

Qno7: Why do you think the king wanted the throne? 

Ans: The king wanted the throne because he thought if the throne could make a  cowherd give wise decisions, wouldn't it help him to become a better king. so he wanted the throne to become a better king.


2. Books (Poem)

1. What are called the ' world of wonders'?

Ans: The books are called 'the world of wonders'.

2. 'The room we sit in, melts away. Why does the poet say so?

Ans: The Poet means here that he gets lost in imagination on reading books.

3. ' And we find ourselves at play

     With someone who, before the end,

    May become our chosen friend.'

     What do these lines mean.

Ans: It means that while reading books, we like different characters of different stories & make them             friends

4. How does a book help us visit different places?

Ans: By reading different stories of different places, we feel to travel different places.

5. Which place is referred to as 'over there'?

Ans:" Over there" indicates the place in story of  the book.

6. Why does the poet compare a book to a magic box?

Ans: it is because a book holds all things for his lovers.

7. 'Books hold all things for their lovers.; What does the poet mean by this line?

Ans: The books have all variety of stories, plays & other things to read which a reader or its lover                     wants.

8. Complete the following lines from the poem.

 Ans:     Or we sail  along the page

             To some other land or age

             Here's our body in the chair,

9. Write rhyming words for the following

10. 'Books can prove to be our best friends.' Write five sentences on this statement.

Ans:-

1. Good Books enriches our mind with good thoughts and knowledge just like a good friend.

 2. We cannot feel alone in the company of books.

3. We can learn many good things while reading a good book.

3. When we are alone, we can always pick up a book and start reading to feel relax.

4 Books are our best friends because they inspire us to do great things in life and overcome our        failures.

5. Books bring positive value to our life.

Read & Answer the following Questions:

Q no 1: What opinion did Rahul's classmates have of Rahul?

Ans:- Rahul's classmate thought Rahul a show-off.

Q no 2: What mattered the most to Rahul?

Ans:- Topping the class mattered the most to Rahul.

Q no 3: Why did everyone in the class like Ashish?

Ans:- Everyone liked Ashish because he liked to work hard for himself & for others

Q no 4: Why do you think Rahul enjoyed examinations?

Ans:- Rahul enjoyed examination because he spent all of his time for himself and never helped other.

Q no 5: Why was Rahul happy in the examination hall?

Ans:- Rahul was happy because Ashish was not present in examination hall. He did not want Ashish to write his exam and wanted him to fail.

Q no 6: Why did Rahul get a strange feeling when he came near the gate?

Ans:- Rahul got a strange feeling because his grandfather was not at the gate to receive him, neither was his dog. He also saw a doctor.

Q no 7: Who had helped Rahul's grandfather? How did Rahul feel when he got know the name of that person

Ans: Ashish had helped Rahul's grandfather. Rahul was ashamed because he had wished that Ashish should fail. He was ashamed to had such a wish for a boy who had saved his grandfather.

 I Must Feed My Mother

Read & Answer the following Questions


Qno1: How did the white elephant look after his mother?

Ans:- The white elephant took good care for his mother. he found a cool cave for her. He would first feed her and then only would he eat. he told everything about the forest to her.

Qno2: what did the elephant tell his mother?

Ans: The elephant told his mother about the forest, different seasons, hills, birds, flowers & different colours.

Qno3: How did the elephant help the man?

Ans: The elephant carried the man safely out of the forest & put him on a path that will take him home.

Qno4:' I do not wish to harm anyone,' Why did the elephant say so to himself?

Ans: The elephant said to himself because he did not want that the men of the kind would listen it. Although he had the power to face them.

Qno5: What preparations were made to welcome the elephant?

Ans: Following preparations were made to welcome the elephant:-

i) City were decorated.

ii) Musicians, the conch-blowers & the dancers were called.

iii) wide stall was decorated with multi-colored cloth, silk flags & garlands of flowers.

iv) Best rice was ordered for new royal elephant.

Qno6: Why did the king let the elephant go back to the forest?

Ans: The king let the elephant go back to the forest because of his sad mother.

Qno7:" May the king live long!" Why did the elephant's mother say this?

Ans: The elephant's mother said this because he was overjoyed to hear her son's voice and was happy on the decisions of king for sending her son back.

Qno8: What kind of a son was the white elephant? Give reasons for your answer.

Ans: The white elephant was very loyal son to his blind mother. he took good care of her . He would first first feed his mother & then only he would eat.

This is Going to Hurt Just A Little Bit (Poem)

Qno1:- 'One thing I like less than most things is' What does one thing mean?

Ans: One thing means sitting in a dentist's chair with my mouth wide open.

Qno3:- How does the poet describe the mouth?

Ans: Mouth is described as a section of road that is being worked.

Qno4: And then at last he says;

a) who is being referred to in the given line?

Ans:- Dentist

b) What does 'he' say at last?

Ans: He says come back in three months

Qno7:- Pick any line from the poem that makes you laugh?

Ans:- " your mouth is like a section of road that is being worked on."

Qno1:- How was the Wicked Witch of the East Killed?

Ans:- The falling house killed the Wicked Witch of the East.

Qno2:- Why did the guardian of the gates bow to Dorothy? 

Ans:- The guardian of the gates bow to Dorothy because She had melted the Wicked Witch of the West. 

Qno3:- Why were the travelers surprised when they were in the Throne Room?

Ans:- They were greatly surprised when they looked about and saw no one at all in the room.

Qno4:- What were the promises the travelers had come to claim? List each promise the Oz had made.

Ans:-

a) The Oz promised to send Dorothy to Kansas.

b) The Oz promised to give brains to the Scarecrow.

Qno5:- Why did the lion roar? What happened after that?

Ans:- The Lion gave a large loud roar to frighten the Wizard. This roar was so fierce and dreadful that Toto jumped away & tipped over the screen which fell and crashed.

Qno6:- Why did the Tin Woodman rush towards the little bald man?

Ans:- The Tin Woodman rushed towards the little bald man to know who he is.

Qno7:- What did the Oz tell the travelers after they saw him?

Ans:- He said, "Don't speak so loud, or you will be overheard and I will be ruined. I'm supposed to be the Great Wizard."

Qno8:- Why do you think the Oz's voice trembled when he heard that the Wicked Witch of the West had been destroyed?

Ans:-Because now He has to fulfill the promise made by him to Dorothy and her friends. And was impossible for him.

Qno9:-Why do you think the Lion is called the Cowardly Lion?

Ans: The Lion is called the Cowardly Lion because he did not have courage to do anything and therefore, he asked the Oz to give him some courage.
